Simplifying the healthcare process for someone with accessibility issues

‘John’ had been known to the Health Squad for a long time, as after a triple heart bypass, he wanted continuous support to monitor his blood pressure. This steady process helped us to develop a positive and friendly relationship with him. It also led to an improved willingness for John to discuss his healthcare issues, which he admitted he had not always been very good at addressing.

Following his operation, John was had a lot of confusion about the letters he was receiving for appointments and consultations. He was waiting for cataract surgery, causing him issues with being able to read the letters himself.

John approached the Health Squad with these letters, and our team went through them with him. We identified when and where his appointments were for and provided him a simplified list with what these related to. We also contacted the NHS patient transport service as John’s mobility was severely poor.

John has since stated that he was very grateful for this support as it meant he was able to regain some control and understanding on his healthcare.
