Overcoming barriers to access help for an abuse victim living through homelessness

After meeting ‘Lisa’, immediately significant concerns were noted about her welfare. She had been diagnosed with learning difficulties and had been homeless for around five years. She was also engaging in substance misuse and was a victim of ongoing sexual, physical, emotional and coercive abuse.

The Health Squad team got into action to find meaningful support for Lisa. We then received contact from a mental health social worker, ‘Paula’, based in the community. We already had a working relationship with Paula and knew how best to work together to plan the right path for Lisa to access help. A community outreach approach was needed.

After a joint appointment in the local community, Paula and Health Squad collaborated on Lisa’s case, leading Lisa to be urgently housed in a secure premises, as she posed a risk to herself.
